★★★★★
Black Stag built our full alfresco — spotted-gum deck, charcoal-steel pergola, integrated lighting, the lot. Three years on it's the best room in the house. The build quality is genuinely premium.

We'd had two builders try to design our covered outdoor area without much luck. Luke walked the site, sketched something on the spot, came back with a fixed-price quote. Built it on time, looks incredible.

A good deck and pergola is the difference between a backyard you walk past and an outdoor room you live in nine months of the year. Black Stag Projects has been building both across the Hills District and northern Sydney for 18+ years. Every build is on-tools work by Luke and the team — fixed-price scope, no sub-contracted-out grief.

We design and build complete outdoor areas: a hardwood deck with a steel pergola overhead, integrated lighting, a glass balustrade overlooking the gum trees. Or just the deck. Or just the pergola over an existing concrete pad. Brief is yours, build is ours.

Every deck and pergola is engineered for Australian Standards (AS 1684, AS 4100) with full BAL compliance where bushfire-zone certification is required (a lot of the Hills District falls in BAL-12.5 to BAL-29). We handle DA approval where needed — most pergolas under the exempt-development threshold don't need one.

Decks get a 25-year structural guarantee on the timber sub-frame and Master Builders 6-year warranty across the build. We're not interested in cheap, we're interested in something that still looks great in 2040.

Materials & design

Built around your site, your style

Every Black Stag build is specced to suit the home. These are the most-asked-for options — but the brief is yours.

Spotted Gum

Our default decking timber — Class 1 durability, beautiful grain, weathers to a stunning silver-grey or stays warm-brown with annual oil.

Blackbutt

Lighter Australian hardwood, BAL-29 rated, popular for clean modern decks. Excellent screw retention.

Charcoal Steel Pergola

Powder-coated structural steel, charcoal or black satin finish. Slim profile, decades of life, low maintenance.

Hardwood Pergola

Spotted-gum or blackbutt structural posts and beams. Warm, premium, blends with native landscaping.

How we work

Site visit, take measurements, talk through how you want to use the space. Free, no obligation, no pitch.

02

Design + fixed-price quote

Detailed plans, engineering specs, BAL assessment if needed, fixed-price quote. You sign off before any timber is ordered.

03

Luke runs the build, our in-house crew on site. Sub-frame, decking, pergola structure, lighting, gas plumbing if there's a fireplace. Daily clean-up, weekly updates.

04

Handover

Walk-through, oil application, defects list, warranty paperwork. 25-year structural guarantee on the sub-frame.

FAQs

What clients usually ask

How long does a deck and pergola build take?
A standard 40m² hardwood deck with steel pergola is around 3-4 weeks on site. Larger or more complex builds (multi-level, integrated kitchen, bushfire-zone certification) can run 6-10 weeks.
Do you need council approval?
Most pergolas under 25m² and decks under 1m off the ground fall under exempt development and don't need DA. Bigger builds usually do. We handle the paperwork either way.
What about BAL bushfire rating?
A lot of the Hills District is in BAL-12.5 to BAL-29. We specify BAL-compliant materials (blackbutt, spotted gum, sealed sub-frames, ember-protection) and provide the BAL assessment as part of the build.
Can you integrate an outdoor kitchen or fireplace?
Yes — we build the deck and pergola as one job with the outdoor kitchen, gas fireplace, lighting and electrical. That's the standard Black Stag spec for premium alfresco zones.
Hardwood or composite decking?
Both have their place. We default to spotted-gum hardwood — better look, longer life, easier to refinish. Composite (e.g. Trex, Modwood) is lower maintenance but doesn't age the same way. Happy to spec either.
Do you build to architect plans?
Yes — we work to architect or designer drawings regularly, and also offer in-house design where you don't have a separate architect.
